Scrabblicious

Our Scrabble team has done it again. Coached and mentored by Mr Suhaimi and Mrs Audrey Teo, the team has emerged Champions in the Super Zonal Series Scrabble Championships. The enor team comprising of Natalia 6/11, Shawn from 5/10 and Bethanie from 5/10 won the Super Zone Category. Their Juniors came in 3rd.

In the East Zone Category, the another Senior team came in 3rd while the Juniors emerge Champions and 3rd position to complete a great run of results for the entire team. We salute our Scrabblers. Good job everyone.

Swimming

A great day at the pool for our kids. They represented our school at the National Swimming Championships. THe medal haul was truly a huge blessing. Isa Choo won a Gold medal for the 50m Backstroke while Nicole Kon came in 2nd for the 100m Freestyle.

Ellyn Tan came in 3rd for the 50m Breastroke. She came in 5th for the 100m breastroke.

Joshua Ong came in 4th for both the 50m and 100m butterfly.

Sheng Hui also came in 6th and 7th for the for the 50m and 100m breastroke.

Our other swimmers like Arabella, Tzao Kai and Timothy have done their best too.

SHPS Netball achieves a Silver at Nationals

Alas, it was not to be a fairytale ending for our Jr Netball girls. Their gallant efforts and unbeatable run since 2010 were halted by a resilient Fengshan team who clawed their way back to win the National Jr title. Our girls took a 8-3 lead in the 1st quarter and all seem like an upset was on the cards. However, some basic errors let Fengshan back into the game and after fighting all the way to the end, the girls could not overcome the strong showing by their opponents.

It is important to take note that this team, coached by Mr Zanizam have achieved more than anyone could hope for. Mr Zanizam, Mr Aloysius Loh and Mrs Jasmine David have surpass even their own targets of a top four placing by beating established teams like St. Margrets, Tanjong Katong (in the zone) and other Netball powerhouses who's combine budget and coaching resources have made our accomplishment all that more a satisfying one. Mr Zanizam, a PE teacher at the school, has made many inroads into the sport and has brought SHPS netball to a new level through his limited but priceless contribution to the sport. He himself admited that going up against established coaches was a truly exciting and at times stressful experience but he has truly savoured every moment of the journey.

Erika packs a punch at the golf course

Erika of class 4/7 came in 4th at the recent National Inter-Primary School Golf Championship with a score of 93. She came very close to winning it as she was only two shots behind the eventual winner, who was also a couple of years older. Recently in June, Erika also travelled to KL,Malaysia to represent Singapore in the Under-12 division at the CIMB Junior Development Programme Stage 2, where the region's (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia) top junior golfers are competing to represent their respective countries. Golfers have to qualify for the first stage and only the best make it to the next stage. There are four stages in total with a final (Dec) where they will undergo a two week training stint in theUS with the PGA Tour's top instructors.

We are hopeful that Erika can make it all the way. A big thank you goes out to her form teacher for her support and understanding. She did a great job helping ERika catch up with her school work whenever she had to miss class due to her golf.

We wish Erika all the best in her future endeavours in Golf.

Netball Girls on to the National Finals

Our Jr girls have made it to the finals. This achievement is due to their hard work and determination to be the best they can be. Watching them play at their quarter finals, I was impressed by their team spirit and discipline. Their coaches Mr Zanizam and Mr Loh have taken them through the paces, provided them with the skills and mentally prepared them for every aspect of the game.

No matter what the results on Thursday, 21/7/11, we are truly proud of their achievements so far. If you would like to come and support them, inform Mrs David who is consolidating the supporters list for the finals. Go Forward Girls!

East Zone Netball Champs

Team St.Hilda's were rewarded on Thursday 21/4, when our netball girls completed their East Zone Championships in style. The Senior girls came in 4th and did tremendously well making it to the top four of the competitive tournament, but it was their Juniors that clinched the East Zone Champions spot with a 23-11 win over their arch rivals Tanjong Katong Pri. Rivals apart, both schools share a mutual respect for each other as they have met on countless occassions in the finals in the last 5 years but Tanjong Katong has always had the stronger team.

The Juniors Girls did not have a easy time either with TKPS holding them to 4-4 and 7-7 in both the 1st two quarters. Subsequently, the girls pull away with a convincing win to seal the first ever Championship title for Mr Zanizam and his teachers.

The netball teachers were also grateful for the tremendous support from the pupils and staff who could make it to support even though we had a Founders' Day going on at the same time.

We are truly proud of the teams' achievements and hope they will go on to the Nationals to bring more glory back for the school.

Congrats Sailors

Our sailors did our school proud with another masterclass performance at the National Sailing championships. Their perserverance and teamwork shone through as we showed the competition why St.Hilda's Sailing is a force to be reckon with. The Junior Boys achieved the champions tag with a wonderful finish in their category. The team who won the title comprising of Zhong Han, Kean and Daniel sailed brilliantly to help the school win another 1st.
Our Jr girls miss the top spot by 1 point as the Tao Nan team beat them on points. However, this did not dampen the team's spirit as the girls have found a new found passion to race for each other as seen by their wonderful performance on the water. Similarly, the Senior boys miss the 1st place by just one point too but we are really proud of the combined efforts. The competition is always keen and as seen by the close scores, the boys really did their utmost best. We are proud of all our sailors.

Mrs Wee and her team of teachers, Mr Noh and Mr Yap deserve all the credit for bringing up a team of sailors who we can be proud of. Our SHPS sailors did well yesterday narrowly missing out on first place. Tao Nan beat them by 1 point but overall we are proud of their achievement at the National level. The Juniors sail today for the start of their competition. Both the boys and girls are raring to go but the weather has held them back this morning. The championships have many good schools who have strong sailing teams. Schools like Tao Nan, Katong Convent, ACS and us, tend to have high expectations of our sailors. The top 3 places could be separated by mere 1 or 2 points.

Next week ,18th to 21 April, is a truly an exciting week for everyone at St.Hilda's Pri. Apart from celebrating our Founder's Day on Thur, our respective Sports teams are going to be battling it out for honours at the respective National and Zonal finals. Our Sailors will be sailing at the National Sailing Centre at East Coast. The National Sailing Competition will pit our young talents with other emerging talents of other schools. For 4 days, we will see both the Junior and Senior boys and girls showcasing their sailing skills. VENUE - Singapore Sailing Federation, 1500 East Coast Parkway.

On the 19 April, the Senior Hockey boys will play St.Andrews in an all saints final for the coverted National Hockey Title. The boys will be trying to win this category for the first time for St.Hilda's Previously, this team has won 2 Jr Division titles but St.Andrews are no push overs. They boast a strong team that have grown more skillful over the last year since our last meeting at the National Jr Finals. VENUE - Sengkang Hockey Stadium, 57, Anchorvale Road.

Lastly, the netball girls will face Fengshan Pri in the Junior Girls finals while the Seniors will play a 3rd /4th placing. Both teams have already achieved so much by ending up in the top 4 this year again. Their efforts will be realised on Thur, 21 April, at the ITE Simei Campus. All the best boys and girls. Another first for St.Hilda's

In line with our external CCA policy, St.Hilda's Primary fielded its first Gymnast for the annual National competition. Anthea Low (in white facing us in picture) is only in Primary 2 but already she has experienced a competition at the National level. Last Wednesday she participated in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Nationals. Her event, the Rope and Ball, had about 40 participants. There was a good crowd and a great atmosphere with both competitors and spectators enjoying a low-key, yet high quality competition. Here are some interesting facts about the rope and ball competition;The rope may be in hemp or of a synthetic material which retains the qualities of lightness and suppleness. Fundamental requirements include leaps over the rope and skipping. Other elements include swings, throws, circles, rotations and figures of eight. For the ball, it is made of rubber or synthetic material and is 18-20cm in diametre. It should rest in the gymnast's hands and not rest against the wrist or be able to be grasped. Fundamental elements include throwing bouncing or rolling, The gymnast must use both hands and work on the whole floor area whilst showing continuous flowing movement. Anthea's Mom, Mrs Low and her daughter, Anthea. She finished a respectable 19 out of 35. Not bad for a P2 girl.

SHPS participated in the Lim Boon Heng Scrabble competition for the first time this year.

This is an individual competition with players playing 3 games in a 'King of the Hill' format. Players with similar scores are pitted against each other.

About 180 pupils took part in the Primary School category and our pupils did our school proud. Out of these 180, we have 5 top 10 placings and the top 3 are all from our school.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is CCA compulsory for all levels?
CCA is only compulsory from P4 to P6. P1-P3 can join CCAs too but may change CCAs along the way in order to find a niche area. Certain CCAs may have selection criteria as places are limited.

2) How do pupils sign up for CCA? What is the entire process?
The pupils sign up by filling in 3 options for CCA. Their names will be channeled to the CCA teachers in charge who will arrange for trials/selection tests within the 1st 2 weeks of school. If successful, your child will be informed of subsequent trainings through letters. If your child is unsuccessful, his name is given to the next option on his application. The process is repeated until the last option is exhausted and the name is then given back to the CCA department who will follow up with the child to select a new CCA or channel him/her to available CCAs. The 3 options should be completed by end Jan. For 2011, we will be completing this entire process online for P3-P6 pupils.

3) Are pupils allowed to withdraw from CCA? Will he be penalize in anyway?
Pupils are encourage to stay with one CCA only from P3 onwards. The only penalty would be any payments will not be refunded to you. Furthermore, your child will be behind his peers if he joins another CCA at a later part of the year or the next year.

4) What advice could you give parents on transportation issues?
The school will provide extra transportation services after CCA(at 5.30pm). Parents will be given more information on how to sign up and the cost of such an arrangement for your child. Alternatively, your child can also join the 6.30pm bus with the PM session pupils.
For PM session pupils, CCA is not compulsory so if transportation cannot be arranged, don’t sign up for a CCA. The school will explore if a similar service to the AM session can be provided if significant number of pupils require it.

5) Can my child join more than one CCA?
We would advise against enrolling in too many CCAs as the child's day would be quite long. Also, we have to be fair to all our pupils and ensure that all have a place in a CCA. As such, if you were to signup for a second CCA you would need to make your intentions known to the first CCA teacher in charge personally. Emails can be found at the CCA blog. You will only be notified of your child's second CCA application once all the 1st time applicants have been assigned CCAs. For now, just fill in the form and try to add a cover note on your intentions. Thanks

6) Will there be swimming CCA for P2s anymore?
The swimming module has been removed as the school has reviewed its policy. The current swim safe programme provided by MCYS is being reviewed for its content and also the school's ability to fit it into the Co-curricular programme structure. We advice all pupils to complete a basic swimming certification by the end of P2. For now, such programmes are available at the public swimming pools.

7) Are there qualfiying criteria for CCAs?
Yes for some CCAs. Sailing requires participants to be swimming certified. Sports CCAs require clearance from School Health Services on child's physical condition. The Sports Club only accepts pupils who are not in competitive CCAs.

8) What is the Sportsclub programme all about?
Sportsclub is a CCA which provides recreational Sports for pupils who could not make it to a competitive sport. The club has 4-5 sports to choose from such as soccer and floorball. Pupils interested will only start in Term 2 as the club operates from Term 2 to Term 4 only. This is due to House Practices falling on the same day. As such, in term 1, your child would most likely be involved in House practice during the same slot.

9) Can my child still join a CCA in the middle of the year?
Yes but chances of getting into competitive CCAs will be slim.

10) Is there Golf and Swimming as a CCA? What is the external policy really mean?
Our external CCA policy caters to our golfers who train with private coaches. We only register them for competitions and collate info for their report books. To give you an example, school swimmers taking par in National Competitions have to train 4 times a week twice a day. Their commitment levels are very high but the school has no swimming team. As such, this policy will allow them to be recognised for their efforts. Now swimming was chosen based on the fulfillment of a few criteria such as their training commitments, the evidence of a strong interest group in the school who were already taking up the sport and the fact they could represent the school in the nationals a sanctioned competition which made their achievements or participation easier to validate. The other CCA which receive this status is Golf. We are on the lookout for one or two more CCAs that can fulfill those criteria and also have a substantial number of pupils actively involved in such a CCA. This activity must be endorsed by the CCA Branch as an official CCA.

More questions from parents
A) Do competitive sports train twice a week?
If you child makes it past the trials for that sport, be prepared to train at least twice a week due to the nature of competitive sports. Certain sports like Table-tennis and Hockey have different days for different levels to train. Space constraints and availability of equipment are some factors considered in our planning.

B) What sports are available for Sportsclub?
The sports change from year to year. The main three that will be available are Soccer, Table-Tennis and Badminton as recreational sports and non-paying sports. Pupils who opt or get Sportsclub as a choice will be surveyed to see which choice of sport they prefer. There will also be paying sports that are costly to run and require specific coaches to come in to teach. In 2010, we had rollerblading and in 2009 we had golf. It will depend on how many pupils opt for the recommended paying sports for the club.

C) What is the level of Swimming competency expected as part of the criteria to join Sailing?
Pupils are expected to have a minimum of Bronze Level certification before joining Sailing. Registration for the CCA requires parents to confirm and produce documentation that pupils have attained this level of certification for swimming before they can attend Sailing as a CCA.

Our Junior boys are playing in another final this Monday, 2 Aug at Delta Sports Complex. Playing our opponents, St.Andrew's Jr, again brings back memories of last year's gripping Jr Final where our boys won the Nationals in a penalty shoot out after a full time score of 2-2. The atmosphere was electrifying, with many teachers and pupils coming to support our boys. We expect another exciting affair on Monday with 100 supporters already signing up for transportation to the venue. Lets make this final another evening to remember. See you at Delta at 4pm for the match.

Well done Hockey and Guzheng

Our Guzheng and Hockey pupils did well yesterday. The Guzheng group completed the SYF performances for our school by receiving the Silver Award for their performance. After months of hard work, the pupils efforts have paid off.

Hockey was also an exciting affair at Sengkang Stadium as a hundred pupils descended on Sengkang Hockey Stadium to support our boys in the National Senior Boys final. Playing our very good opponents, multiple times Champions Punggol Primary, the boys gave it their all. Even after going 2 goals down, they fought right to the end and werer rewarded by a late goal. The fighting spirit was accompanied by the loud cheers of our supporters led by Mr Zanizam, Mr Aloysius Loh and a host of other teacher personalities on the drums from our music department. The supporters led by Mr Aidil, had a repertoire of cheers designed by him, to chant to. The whole atmosphere was carnival like. Even after the opponents led by two goals, the supporters did not waiver. A big thank you to all the supporters for keeping the school spirit high.

Wonderful Sailing and Inspiring Hockey

Our boys and girls in our Sailing Team are representing us at the National Sailing Championships this week. So far, our Senior Boys have emerge as Champions in their division while the girls managed an impressive second. Today the Juniors completed 3 races and were placed 2nd and 3rd for boys and girls respectively. We are truly blessed with the results.

Hockey too manage to squeeze into the last 4 of the National Senior Boys hockey Tournament. Our Semi-finals are on Friday 23rd April against our fellow Anglican brothers, St.Andrews School. Last year we met them in the final and so it will be another meeting between two strong rivals but at the same time good friends. Both teams boast excellent team play and judging by last year's final, it will be an exciting game whatever the result. We wish all players all God's blessings. Jai Ho!

Three Finalist for National Swimming Championships

Abielle and Isa at the Toa Payoh Swimming Complex

Our pupils, involved in swimming as an external CCA, have done well at the recent National Swimming Heats. On Monday, Isa Choo qualified for the 50m Backstroke Final with a time of 38.12 . She was joined by Abielle Yeo who also qualified for the same event for the B Div Girls in a time of 36.15. Nicole Kon who completed the 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle in 32.94 and 1:14.23 respectively, booked her place in the finals too.

On Tuedsay, Isa and Abielle went on to complete their outstanding performances by qualifying for their respective division backstroke events. This Friday, these three girls will compete to bring more glory to the school and improve on their personal performances. May the favour of the Lord be upon our swimmers.

Hockey,Table-Tennis, Rope Skipping and Netball Competitions

Our Netball girls and Hockey boys have started competing in their respective competitions. The Senior girls are doing well while the Junior girls, after a slow start have gone on to record impressive wins. The hockey boys won their first match of the National competition. The Senior boys beat SJI 1-0 in a very close game. The final goal came in the last minute. Table-tennis is also mid-way through their zonal championships while the Rope Skipping team has completed their zone championships with another amazing haul of medals. Boys' Brigade setting new targets!

Our Boys's Brigade got a taste of Archery last Friday at the Leadership Training Camp. The activity captured in these few photos was most exhilirating for the boys. It was a fun change from the normal drills they do each week. The boys got to try out fundamentals of good shooting with a bow. It was timely that the boys got to have a chance to take part in this activity since Archery is one of the YOG events.

Most will be familiar with Darren Choy, who's name is synonymous with the sport. He has been appearing in many articles of late. He won the Gold in his sailing class during the recent AYG and really is a true sportsman. He commented recently in the papers about why he didn't just sit out the last race once he realised he had won it already and he replied, "Of course I will race. If I don't, I would be looking down on my competitors. You must not shame your competitors. That is just basic sportsmanship." Spoken in the true spirit of the games.

The Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Sailing Federation Mr Andrew Sanders once commented, “Sailing is about building character.” He believes that these young athletes will be our leaders of tomorrow. “Whether you come first or are further back in the fleet, it’s always about learning. The environment is always throwing you challenges, same as in life, and you need to tackle them, show resilience and come back.
This is what Sailing is about and Mr Vai hopes that St.Hilda's will provide more rising stars in the field of Sailing to join the ranks of Sailors like Sherman Cheng, Daniella Ng, Elizabeth Yin and Darren Choy.

In hockey, Kevin who is now at Raffles Institution, plays goalkeeper for them and got into the school both on his own merit and his Hockey goalkeeping skills. From P4, he was earmarked for great things as a keeper by an ex-goalkeeping legend for Singapore, Mr Ronney, who watched him play during the schools nationals. To date, he was chosen as a reserve keeper for the recent Mens Jr World Cup and will one day be covering those goalpost for the country.

The school is truly proud of these students'achievements. We hope to hear more about other ex-Hildans who will inspire our pupils passing through our gates to dream the impossible dream and live life to the fullest. May God grant them more success in the years to come

Gong Xi Fa Cai. Our school celebrated Chinese New Year in style as our CCA aesthetic groups performed a sneak peak at some of their SYF items. From Indian Dance who featured 2 chinese girls in their team, to Modern Dance who had great poise and look on track for a showing at the SYF. Happy Chinese New Year to all our friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is CCA compulsory for all levels?
CCA is only compulsory from P4 to P6. P1-P3 is for them to explore and find their niche.

2) Are pupils allowed to withdraw from CCA? Will he be penalize in anyway?
Pupils are encourage to stay with one CCA only from P3 onwards. The only penalty would be any payments will not be refunded to you. Furthermore, your child will be behind his peers if he joins another CCA at a later part of the year or the next year.

3) What advice could you give parents on transportation issues?
The school cannot provide extra transportation services after CCA as we are already heavily taxed transporting pupils to training venues. Some parents negotiate with their child’s bus drivers to allow them to return with PM session pupils instead since they did not use the service at noon time. For PM session pupils, CCA is not compulsory so if transportation cannot be arranged, don’t sign up for a CCA.

4) Can my child join more than one CCA?
We would advise against enrolling in too many CCAs as the child's day would be quite long. Also, we have to be fair to all our pupils and ensure that all have a place in a CCA especially with P1 pupils coming on board this year. As such, if you were to signup for a second CCA you would need to make your intentions known to the CCA teacher in charge personally. Emails can be found at the CCA blog. You will only be notified of your child's second CCA application once all the 1st time applicants have been assigned CCAs. For now, just fill in the form and try to add a cover note on your intentions. Thanks

5) Is P2 Swimming a CCA? Where is their website?
The swimming module you see in the CCA form is more a service for pupils who have not been able to get basic swimming certification, an opportunity to learn a lifeskill at a cheaper rate. Th module only last 7 weeks and then the child may go on to another CCA. Arrangements to start together can be made as in your case. We usually do so once we have consolidated the numbers as that will also affect our decision on how many sessions we should plan for this year.

6) The letter stated that the Swimming CCA is compulsory for non-swimmers. My son is currently taking swimming lessons (unrelated to SHPS), but is still at beginner level. Must he still be enrolled in the SHPS Swimming CCA then?
No. as long as there is proof of a basic certification he can be excused.

7) What is the swimming programme all about? If my child is already taking swimming or I want to do so outside, what are my options?

Swimming is just a basic swimming course which the school provides in order to fulfill our PE objectives of every child a swimmer by the end of P2. If the parent wants to get the child’s certification outside , they may do so. As long as the swimming certification(basic) is completed by end P2. If she joins the school one, it is over 7 weeks which will be about 1 term. Then she can move on to another CCA.. A bronze Cert is higher than the basic certification so that will be enough to excuse the child from the swimming programme.

8) Can my child still join a CCA after the swimming programme?
All pupils who sign up for Swimming can reapply for a CCA once it is over. In fact, pupils who want to join Dance, Violin or other key activities will be scheduled in first swimming group in order to join other CCAs later in the year.

9) Is there Golf and Swimming as a CCA? What is the external policy really mean?
There is no Golf programme in SHPS. All our golfers trained with their own private coaches. The only recreational golf programme for our upper pri kids is the sportsclub programme which depends on whether enough pupils want to go for such an option which will require a fee for learning golf.

Our external CCA policy caters to our golfers who train with private coaches. We only register them for competitions and collate info for their report books. To give you an example, school swimmers taking par in National Competitions have to train 4 times a week twice a day. Their commitment levels are very high but the school has no swimming team. As such, this policy will allow them to be recognised for their efforts. Now swimming was chosen based on the fulfillment of a few criteria such as their training commitments, the evidence of a strong interest group in the school who were already taking up the sport and the fact they could represent the school in the nationals a sanctioned competition which made their achievements or participation easier to validate. The other CCA which receive this status is Golf. We are on the lookout for one or two more CCAs that can fulfill those criteria and also have a substantial number of pupils actively involved in such a CCA. This activity must be endorsed by the CCA Branch as an official CCA.

10) What is sportsclub? What sports are available to them?
The sports are Floorball, Soccer, Inline skating, Bowling or Badminton. We are still considering more sports depending on the pupils interests.

Christian Fellowship Nite

The Christian Fellowship had their annual CF nite to mark the end of another year. The club consist of pupils who wish to find a meaning in life through the teachings and guidance of our Lord. Through the dedication of their teachers in charge, Mrs Esther Lian and Mrs Cheang Foong Lan and their ever commited volunteers, the club has done a lot for these pupils in providing them a place to socialise and learn more about themselves. The CF Nite also marks the last day for the P6 pupils and a few volunteers with the club after so many years of service with CF. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours and may God bless their respective journeys.

P5 Camp

Our P5 pupils were unfortunate not to have a 3 day camp in July due to the H1N1 concerns. As such, the school worked very hard to put together a 1 day trip to Jalan Bahtera for a 1 day camp. The weather was not on our side though resulting in all our activities being confined to indoor facilities. We refuse to allow it to dampen our spirits and the kids went on to enjoy a day of bonding and a bit of rock clmbing.

Excellent results from the recent 5th National Jr Scrabble Championships 2009 held at Ang Mo Kio Secondary last Thursday. Our Team 3 comprising of Kang Hong Wei, Lim Eng Yin, Ian Choo, Sandra Teo and Jacob Chew won the championship and have brought glory to our school. The other teams also did well with some of the players winning 4 out of 5 of their games. Congratulations to Mr Suhaimi and Mrs Teo for guiding their club to more achievements. Our Junior Hockey Boys have won the National Hockey Championships. The boys played in one of Hockey's most exhilarating finals. St.Andrews Primary put up a brilliant fight to finish the score at 2-2 after the final whistle. Extra Time could not settle the score so the game went to penalties. Our goalkeeper Jun Wei was the hero saving 4 penalties to win the title. We also had great support from 100 supporters who came down to cheer the team on. Check out the video of the students cheers. Congratulations Abielle

Abielle Yeo came in 2nd in the 50m Back Stroke at the National Swimming Championships. Her time of 36.06 seconds was a personal best for her. Swimming in lane 6, she fought off a later challenge from traditonal powerhouse, Nanyang Primary, to win a place on the podium. Nanyang Pri's dominance could be seen throughout the competition and also it was reflected by the 1st place and 3rd and 4th place finish in Abielle's race. She also came in 6th for her 100m Back Stroke event.

We are truly proud of her achievement. The other 2 swimmers Ernest Teo and Nicole Kon should also be commended for being in the top 8 of the National Swimming Finals. They came in 8th and 6th resepectively and were happy to have improved their own personal times.

Greetings from Singapore Sports School. Our school's swimmers have just completed their 1st session of events. Arabella, Isa, Ernest, Nicole, Joshua, Abielle, Aldrich and Sheng Hui swam in various events. So far, Ernest and Nicole have made it to the finals which will be held next Thursday. Being in the finals means they are the fastest 8 swimmers in the nation for that category. We are truly proud of them. More news from the pool later today when the 2nd round of heats are completed.

2ND Session ended with another swimmer making into the last 8. Abielle Yeo qualified for the 50m Back Stroke. We will have the last group of swimmers swimming tomorrow in their heats.

P5 NE Show - NDP rehearsals

Our P5 pupils had a great time watching the NDP rehearsals last Sat. Apart from a massive downpour, the event was a success. From the mass displays to the showcase of Singapore's defensive power to the sky-diving teams and the amazing lights on display, every pupil and teacher felt a sense of pride for our country and how far we had come. The NDP this year showcased some interesting new ideas. There were dancers in windows, the big eye, an interesting terrorist storyline for the mobile display, beach ball fun, dancers on platforms and many small things which made the whole event exciting to watch.

The massive downpour at the end did dampen a few spirits as the kids were drenched. Rain fell from the skies, pouring down the steps like a mini-waterfall. However, we manage to get out and back to school safely.

St.Hilda's Primary has never had Golf as an official sport. This year however, the school decided to help some pupils who were interested in representing the school in Golf at the National Golf Championships. The 3 pupils involved here at Jurong Country Club are Dyeo Xiao En, Dev Bahl and Natalie Teo. All of them have got a high enough handicap in their game to allow them to participate at this year's championship.

The school is looking at ways it can support the pupils by registering them for competitions and providing teachers to accompany them for such tournaments. We have already explored this concept with Swimming and the various parents are positive that they can help with providing the school with support in terms of transport, food,etc. If this concept works, the school may look at other sports that may be willing to adopt such an arrangement in the future.

The three of them train on their own with professional coaches at various clubs. We wish our golfers all the success in their game.

Congrats to our badminton players who came in 4th at the East Zone Tournament. They played valiantly and finish the competition with their heads held high. Their performance was an achievement given the limited resources availed to them. Their coaches and teachers in charge did a great job preparing the kids for the competition. Much credit should also go to the supportive parents who have been sending their kids for extra trainings wherever they can. We wish them all the best in their next competiton at the Nationals. Hockey does the double this week

EAST ZONE CHAMPS

Our hockey boys did the double this week. They started the week playing in the East Zone competition. Over 2 days they played 5 schools and emerged Champions. The team comprised of P4 and P5 boys and every boy did their job to win the title for the school.

On Saturday, we sent 2 teams to participate in the Hockey One Tournament. 22 teams turned up and they played in 2 main categories. Our boys were playing both the U-10 and U-11 games with P4 and P5 players forming the 2 age groups respectively. The P5s won their group and went home with another addition to their trophy cabinet. Many of the boys learnt some new things about their game. We hope the experience at these competitions will provide them with more confidence and self belief in their own skills.

Golf makes its debut

Golf is not a CCA yet at SHPS but our school has decided to support a few golfers at their attempt to participate against other schools at the 2nd PC Golf Tournament last Wednesday at Sembawang Country Club. After observing some our golfers , I must say they can really hold their own. Looking very professional in their golf outfits and lugging their golf clubs around, they played 9 holes and 5 holes depending on their categories. We have 2 golfers who play with a handicap which really speaks volumes for their skill level. We are looking forward to their future participation at the Nationals this July.

Rope Skipping Boys are National Champions!

We have been blessed again with a great result at the recent Rope Skipping Nationals. Our Senior boys won the overall Senior Boys title. This team started small last year and has grown to a very competitive and discipline unit in the last year. Under the charge of Ms Goh Yen Ping and Mrs Noeline Wong, our team has won many accolades at the East Zone and now the Nationals. We salute the pupils who have worked very hard during the holidays and sacrificed their time to bring glory to the school. Pictures will be available soon.

Netball Girls put up a great show!

Our Netball girls finish the East Zone Tournament with a pulsating final against Fengshan and Tanjong Katong yesterday. Both teams finish in second place after 3 weeks of competition. The Jr finals played against Fengshan finished 29-11. They were clearly the better team but our girls have done us proud by beating TKPS in the semis and reaching the finals this year.

Our Senior girls gave TKPS a hard fight all the way to the end. It was all square after the 3rd quarter which showed how much our girls have improved over the last 3 months. The last time these 2 teams met, they won 32-10. This time our girls manage to complete the game with a score 21-17. We salute the girls for the most exciting finals for a long time. We wish them all the best for the Nationals and hope to meet the same two teams again. A big thank you to Mr Zanizam and Mr Aloysius who trained the team on their own. Truly dedicated teachers! We also like to thank all the supporters who came down. It was also a first time the whole steering committee took time off from their busy meetings to come down and support the teams. To God be the Glory!!

Our sailors have done our school proud. The Jr Boys came in 1st while the Jr Girls came in a respectable 3rd. Overall, with the Sr Boys coming in 1st and Sr Girls coming in 2nd yesterday, St.Hilda's Sailing has been blessed with results the whole school can be proud off. Our Senior Sailors made it a one two finish for the National Sailing Championships. The Senior boys team comprising of Malone, Justin and Elliot did us proud by clinching the Senior title. Their nearest contenders Tao Nan gave them a hard fight and finish second just 2 points behind them. Our Senior girls comprising of Renny, Wai Min and Guang Hui also helped the school finish in 2nd place. We celebrate their results and give Glory to God.

Our Juniors are currently sailing over the next 2 days. Currently Jr boys are in 1st place and Jr girls are in 3rd. Go St.Hilda's.

God blessed the sailors with wonderful weather during the 2-day regatta, with plenty of sunshine, light wind on Sat and stronger wind yesterday. The team of SHPS parents were once again in full force, supporting their children in whichever way possible... ferrying their children to and fro, car pooling, washing equipment, flipping boats, providing wholesome packed lunches and energy drinks, helping the sailors in launching and recovery, tying boats back on the racks for transportation back to NSC etc. It was heart-warming to see everyone working as a team.With this regatta behind us, we have 3 precious weeks (6 training sessions) left before the National Inter-school Championships on April 21-24. May God look upon our sailors with favour and bless our training efforts as our sailors prepare for the tough competition that lies ahead. Do keep the team in prayer!

24 Chess Club pupils participated in the 61st National Schools Individual Chess Championship 2009 held on 16 Mar (U13) and 17 Mar (U11 and U9). 3 pupils have won the prizes as follows:
1. Neha Shankar (P 4/8) - She is the Champion for the Girls U11 catergory. She won the Challenge Cup after defeating the player from Nanyang Primary School and winning 3-0 in the playoff game on 18 Mar.

2. Malcolm Tang Zer Han (P 3/9) - He won the Merit Prize (Open U9). He defeated the National Age Group U8 Champion 2009 in the 7th round of the competition.

3. Cephas Yeo Zhi Hao (P 3/7) - He won the Merit Prize (Open U9).

Our Rope Skippers have done well again at the East Zone Championships. They were working very hard throughout the Dec and Mar holidays and their efforts have paid off. Both our Junior and Senior team did well in today's Blaze netball competition.Our Juniors managed to beat 6 other school including CHIJ kellock (Netball powerhouse) but lost narrowly to Fengshan Primary school thus coming in 2nd in the Under 11 division.They could have done better if they had a full squad. Our main GK was away on holiday while our main WD had a fall during the first game and couldn't continue the rest of the game. She was out with a suspected hairline fracture. With that, our defence was exposed. The seniors however, did slightly better, coming in first after a convincing win over CHIJ kellock in the finals. The seniors also took part in the international school and singapore school netball league last month where all the top 4 school in Singapore compete against each other. In this league however, we came in 4th. We shared the same points as St. Marg and CHIJ kellocks who came in 2nd and 3rd respectively but lost to them by goal difference. The netball teams will be participating in the East Zone netball competition when school reopens.May both teams bring glory to the school. - reported by Mr Zanizam

MILO MOE Youth TRYathlon

St.Hilda's Pri had 13 pupils who signed up on their own for the MILO MOE Youth TRYathlon last weekend at Sentosa. The kids had an opportunity to do modified version of a real triatholon. We are proud of their participation and hope photos of them in action will surface over the next few days.

Netball Girls Rock Kaki Bukit Competition

Our Netball girls came in 2nd and 4th respectively at the recent Kaki Bukit Competition which saw them play against other schools. We are proud of them and wish them all the best for their uopcoming East Zone Competition.

Fighting Spirit

Last Wed, our Badminton Senior boys team fought a grueling battle against Temasek Pri. Both schools look equally matched to win the game. We had to play 5 games and win at least 3 to have taken the match. We had a tough first game coming up against one of their best players. Going 1 down did not dampen their spirits. Our boys sprung back to win their double 2nd game by winning the deuce in the last game. That was extermely close. Both boys played with a lot of determination. The next game was a single match. Again, with all the cheering from both teams, the 2 players could feel the extreme pressure. We won the 3rd match and that left the us with 1 more to win the game. The double team struggled at first. Going behind for a while but when they found their momentum, the boys pushed through to win it. I was very proud of their fighting spirit. We wish the boys all the best in their next game, Fri 13th at Tampines Sports Hall at 3.30pm.

We would also like to congratulate Mahes and Jerhtythm(2 boys on the right of picture) for making it to the Under 12 Combined Schools Hockey boys team. They will be training to play in the Pacific School Games in Canberra, Australia at the end of this year. Congrats boys.

Our Chess stars did well at the recent Inter School Chess Championships. The games were keenly contested and our pupils have done well for the school. We are truly proud of their achievements. We also would like to celebrate Neha Shankar's (3/8) success at the World Schools Chess Championships.Neha got a Bronze medal for her individual performance in the 4th World Schools Chess Championships 2008 held in Singapore in the Girls U9 category. She was the only Singaporean to finish in the top 3 in her Under 9 age group. She also won a Gold medal with the Singapore team of which she was their top performer.
